about

Nearly 60 minutes of arousing aural entanglement. From proto-punk rippers and free-jazz-doom-drones, to experimental avant-pop and post-folk, lo-fi, indie-rock. This comp has got all the hyphens you can stand.

Many of the songs that appear here are heralding the arrival of a slew of new Dead Currencies releases due over the next year and a half, and it’s an early fortification of this growing pseudo-hippie commune, loosely resembling a "record label."

El Teatro Esta Cerrado (The Theater Is Closed), features brand new and previously unreleased tracks from Matthew J. Rolin, Monde UFO, Reverse Death, Talons', High Aura'd, Lemon Quartet, Mikel Patrick Avery and more. Plus, the debut of the mysterious new project, Infinite Curses, and a few favorites from some old friends like AU and Australia’s Peter Hollo, that deserve further observance.

Here is a brief track by track breakdown of the proceedings.

Infinite Curses is a free-jazz-doom-drone melee. Everything, plus the kitchen sink. Not much else is known at the time of this writing. Here they preview the upcoming full-length debut on D.C. with "Eco Friendly Habitat." One presumes more info will materialize sooner or later. Follow along: infinitecurses.bandcamp.com/merch/usb-drive-containing-the-secret-to-life

Monde UFO contributes the previously unreleased ripper "Drive Up Drive Thru Solitude." Check out Monde UFO's tantalizing back catalogue here for some breezy lo-fi punk-Tropicália: mondeufo.bandcamp.com

Reverse Death released the stellar "Stretching to Infinity" late last year. Here they contribute an early pass of the tune Starcaster from the forthcoming follow-up on Dead Currencies. Check out their acclaimed debut, "Stretching to Infinity" here: reversedeath.bandcamp.com/album/stretching-to-infinity

Mount Olympic contributes "Sleep In (Till the Cows Come Home)" from the glacially progressing full-length which could appear early next year, two years later... or never. Prior diversions taken on route to this promised opus can be found here: mountolympic.bandcamp.com/album/yuma

Talons' contributes, "New Novelty Winter Blues," an impressive demo from a forthcoming release which we are eagerly awaiting. Talons' brilliant and extensive back catalogue can be explored here: talons.bandcamp.com

High Aura'd contributes the hypnotic "Fever Dream in Amethyst" a previously unreleased track. John Kolodij's epic ambient soundscapes as High Aura'd can be found here: highaurad.bandcamp.com while his masterful effort for Astral Editions and his collaboration with Ezra Feinberg can be found here: johnkolodij.bandcamp.com

Matthew J. Rolin is an old friend. He graciously wrote and recorded the new track "Tumble" for this release. Previous solo work can be found here: matthewjrolin.bandcamp.com as well as his splendid output with wife, Jen Powers as Powers/Rolin Duo some of which can be sourced here: powersrolinduo.bandcamp.com/album/the-nightland and elsewhere on the Astral Editions Label.

Open Field contributes their recently released single, "Woke to a Boot," the latest in a series of breadcrumbs which is leading to a new full length release in the near future. A forbearance of previous releases awaits you here: openfieldmusic.bandcamp.com

raven (Aus.) is Sydney, Australia's Peter Hollo, who contributes his "Faux Naive Journey of Alrightness" which appeared on his record "New Resolution" from 2013. His virtuosic Dead Currencies release, "In a Cold Cottage, In the Dirt, In Outer Space" can be found here: raven.bandcamp.com/album/in-a-cold-cottage-in-the-dirt-in-outer-space-lathe-cut-edition

Mikel Patrick Avery is a filmmaker, musician and member of Natural Information Society, eremiterecords.bandcamp.com/album/since-time-is-gravity Here he contributes an improvised guitar piece using his own line of hand-made guitar pedals. The rest of his brilliant and varied solo work can be found here: mikelpatrickavery.bandcamp.com

Will Ellis has been touring the country playing pedal steel with both Emily Nenni and Teddy & The Roughriders. Here he contributes the gorgeous toe tapper, "Max Shiveley's Dream" in which he plays every instrument. His back catalogue, including his D.C. releases can be found here: willellismusic.bandcamp.com/album/along-the-l-n-lathe-cut-edition

Akron, Ohio's Lemon Quartet released the incomparable "Crestless" in 2020. There is a forthcoming follow up and a limited edition lathe release right here on D.C. later this year. Stay tuned! Here they contribute a track from that forthcoming project. Check out the debut release, Crestless, here: lemonquartet.bandcamp.com/album/crestless

Portland's AU made a monumental swan song of a record when they partnered with the Camas High School Choir for one night, live at Yale Union. You can hear everything that makes AU such a singular, genre defying trip in the track, "Satellite" included here. For the rest of AU's critically acclaimed catalogue saunter over to here: aumusic.bandcamp.com
